Are you blogging or web logging? (Is there a difference?)

(Reading time: 1 – 2 minutes)

It’s Thursday Friday, July 16, 2010. I’m deep in the flow. Work Is Getting Done.

Feels good.

Long time readers (bofem) may have noticed I’ve been a little scarce around here lately.

Not really.

Just seems that way.

While I haven’t been writing articles for Website In A Weekend at my normal pace, I have posted well over 50 articles already in July 2010.

I’m just not posting them here.

Because I’m web logging elsewhere.

You know, writing a log, like a journal. In this case, a technical (b)log dealing with certain technical issues I’m dealing with for a certain upcoming release of Blog Post Engineering (July 27, 2010).

It’s private. While I haven’t restricted access, it shouldn’t be indexed, and I’m NOT getting any search results for it. And that’s just fine for now. Later, perhaps I’ll use the material in a different way.

I write to learn, and I’ve been learning a lot.

If you’re tired of “blogging” and want to write, try web logging.

If it’s public, feel free to leave a link in the comments.

If not, you might like it.

I was under the impression that “blog” was derived from “web log” that they are essentially the same thing.

So basically you’re doing the same thing? Writing posts, but on a different site?

Must say your post title got me to read the article, but Dave, did you actually answer the question?

BTW – best of luck with the technical blog.

Joella, sometimes I think we get so wrapped around the axle with “blogging” we forget the medium was invented to enable people to jot down short notes without digging out a pen and paper.

So. No, I didn’t answer the question. I don’t think there is an answer. But it’s still a question worth thinking about.

What I’m doing has been phenomenal for my productivity. I’m using a timer, and logging 1 hour blocks of time. Sometimes I get a lot done, sometimes, not so much. But every hour is a concrete advance.

I’m getting this notion of a “self-propelled invoice.” I have other time tracking software, but I’d prefer to just write down what I did, then send it on it’s way and have it process itself.

Hrm… with the right pitch, this is fundable…

      I gotta go…

  6. Hey, Dave

Interesting stuff. I do a lot of journalling too. Just not online. I use a lovely notebook and funky pens. Still, like you, I find it wonderful for getting thoughts down and working them through. It’s not technical, perhaps, in the sense you’re talking about. But since I’m a coach figuring stuff out this way is highly relevant to both my life and my work.

Would love to know how this all goes for you and thanks for sharing it!

Before I too thought that “both” were the same. Today I still feel the same way, but I do spend plenty of time “web logging” or should I say “blog hopping” :) Maybe there is a connection there somewhere but it is true that you should also spend time outside of your own box.

  8. I love it. As a writer I sometimes forget to just write. But as a blogger, I have to concentrate on the audience. Hmm. Maybe a mix of both?
