Distributed Denial of Service Attack is Over – Back in the saddle

(Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes)

[Update 2/12/2010: Distributed Denial of Service attack is still going on. I spent 30 minutes on the phone with tech support at Bluehost (see why I like these guys?). Couple of things: 1. this is as bad an attack as they have ever seen, and 2. they have their Big Gun Gurus working on the problem, and they are grinding away at it. So the site is just barely browsable by you, the reader, but still a little too slow for me to much writing. Which is why there is still no post for today.]

Website In A Weekend went down most of today (2/11/2010). Turns out a botnet was harrassing the server. Why? Nobody knows. Doesn’t really matter. Bluehost shifted around a bunch of IP addresses, which should be propagated by now.

This is another one of these articles where readers contribute. Read and see how you can get a link to your site.

Server status page from Bluehost. An ugly business to be sure.

Surf’s up

Not kidding. Mavericks is going off on Saturday. I’m not much of a spectator, I’ll be in the water somewhere. A friend and I will quite likely be at one of our secret spots at least one day this weekend.

Not sure about articles. I have some drafts, but they didn’t get finished with the server going down. Major suckage.

Article writing

Carlos Velez put together an article writing challenge which I’m a part of. This is going to keep me heads down for a couple of weeks. I’ll be posting as usual, probably not doing a lot of socializing. I will try to answer all relevant questions and comments posted here. I probably won’t be looking at my RSS feed for a couple of weeks.

Now it’s great to see this site alive again… Just curious, how frequently Bluehost got DDOS since you joined?

Bert, this is the first time in the 3 years I’ve been with Bluehost that I’ve had this extensive an attack.

It’s still going on. Which is crazy.

My guess is that this is test run for a new botnet being run by a large criminal or multinational interest. Picking on a shared hosting provider would get them lots of data with very little risk. Shared hosting providers have neither the mojo themselves, nor the customers to much more than attempt to get out of the way.

A few runs on shared hosting provides, then go after government or industry site using what they learned.

There’s a whole seamy underside to the web. If you count spam, this covert web traffic is estimated to be 10-15 times larger than the legal web traffic we interact with.

In short, the web ecosystem is slithering with parasites.

No, probably going up into Marin. Doran Cove would be working with this size of swell, so would Limantour. Shark city, heh…

As the guy I learned to surf with said, “when you’re in the water, you’re part of the food chain.”
