(Reading time: 3 – 4 minutes)
Ok, right, I’m not a star blogger. Yet. May never be. But I am cultivating a small, dedicated audience, and I’m working on a fool stunt, writing 101 blog posts on WordPress.
Writing 101 articles requires a bit of inspiration. Sean, a good friend and one of my dedicated readers, suggested I write an article on “SEO blog titles.” That’s such a good idea it’s inspired a series of articles; this article is the first in that series. However, given the “fool stunt” title, this is tricky article to write, for reasons that will become clear as the series unfolds.
First, let’s put on some music. “Fool Stunts” call for The Pogues, “Rum, Sodomy & the Lash,” no doubt in my mind. I’m a man you don’t meet every day, after all.
Musically fortified, we’ll take a look at “star blogger” and “fool stunt,” using both to support the premise of the title, then tie it all back in to SEO blog post titles.
My “fool stunt”
I made a public bet I could write a 101 articles about WordPress faster than a friend could make 101 block prints.
I intend on winning. If I don’t win, I’m still faced with commitment to write 101 blog articles. That’s going to be harder if I lose, and will be double plus ungood if I don’t finish the series. Credibility and reputation are really important online, where everything you ever write is stored somewhere.
Does writing 101 articles qualify as a fool stunt? Not if I win!
What is a “star blogger” anyway?
Truth be told, I’m not exactly sure what a “star blogger” is, and I’m not really sure if I want to be one either. My joy is primarily in the craftsmanship of the writing. What I am sure of is that a star blogger needs to attract attention, just like movie stars, star authors, etc. Having a great headline is the first step in attracting attention. In advertising, the headline has been measured as the most important factor in acquiring readers, thus prospects and ultimately paying customers.
In fact, the difference of one or two words in a title has produced statistically significant changes in readership. There’s more on this in upcoming articles.
The SEO title connection
I promised above that I would close by tying SEO headlines back into the article, and that’s easy now. The title promises fool stunts and star blogging, and information on both is delivered. The title builds intrigue for the reader, and the content delivers on the implicit promise (“How”) to inform the reader. Search engines will be happy with keyword rich content.
One of the most effective teaching methods is demonstration, and I already have more articles underway demonstrating how to adapt proven headlines such as the headline of this article to writing posts and emails that are opened… and read. For example, using what many consider the greatest headline of all time, check out “They Smirked When I Started the Blog—But When I Started To Make Money!” There’s a lot more coming, including reading recommendations, both online and hard copy, so stay tuned!
