There’s many benefits to internal linking within your blog or website:
- Internal linking helps readers find related information which is treated in more depth in different articles.
- SEO benefits for internal linking include anchoring specific keyword and phrases to contextually relevant material found on your website. This helps search engines better classify your content, and better evaluate the quality of your whole website.
Clearly, internal linking linking is a good thing… but it can be tedious once you have hundreds of articles to wade through looking for relevant links.
Writing the Week in Review articles on Website In A Weekend requires linking a large number of blog posts. Finding and linking these posts is tedious. I worked out a method to make it easier, which is published as Practical WordPress Tip #1: Use the “View” link for URL shortcut.

Note: “Deep linking” isn’t quite the same as internal linking explained here. Practical WordPress Tip #18: Deep link to internal anchors explains one form of deep linking.

For SEO effect, internal linking is pretty great. With the internal links you can use perfect anchor texts for the links to maximise the whole SEO effect.
Unfortunately finding the relevant posts takes time, but thank god it’s worth it.

Very practical indeed. Often, I will use the tags to find what I am looking for, open the page and then copy the link. Too much time required. This practical tip makes internal linking a lot easier.

@DiTesco – The more I dig into WordPress, the more I am astounded by the attention to detail the designers and developers paid to every aspect of the platform. There’s a few glaring issues to be sure, but it’s amazing.

It’s amazing that even as simple as some of these are, so few people know them.

Nice useful tip but why so much hassle when you can use a simple plugin like WordPress insight plugin. I’m sure you will love it, since you use lots of iNterlinking… :)

@Harsh – First I’ve heard of it! I suspect if you look at the date of the original Tip, it will precede the August release date of Insights.
In any case, thanks much for the pointer. I went and looked up Insights. It’s developed by Vladimir Prevolac, who has to be one of the best WordPress programmers anywhere. I’ll install it shortly and give it test run. It does look a little bit like overkill though.
So many plugins, so little time!
