My Eyeballs Are Bleeding – And How I Write Thousands of Words Every Week

by Dave Doolin on November 10, 2009 · 21 comments

(Reading time: 4 – 6 minutes)

Gordie’s unhappy.

I can’t say I blame him.

He’s breaking into the blogging world, and it’s tough going. He’s not sure if he’ll throw in the towel or not. Personally, I think he just needs to take a few days off, and he’ll be right back with it. And Mike has it right: if you aren’t bleeding from the eyeballs, you’re probably not working it hard enough.

Personally, I think Gordie’s going to be just fine. He may not have that much traffic, but the traffic he has sticks around to join his community. I subscribed to his RSS feed; I’m interested in seeing where he goes with it.

So how do I it?

Crank out thousands of words every week?

Basically, there’s two reasons.

Is this how blogging feels, sometime?

Is this how blogging feels, sometimes?

First, I fish in the rain. I don’t think about blogging, I just do it. I learned to surf the same way: just go.

Don’t check the surf conditions…

…get in the car and go surf.

After I started checking the surf conditions, I started making excuses: “Too windy blown out.” or “Not enough swell.” Consequently, I’ve lost a lot of ability. I did better surfing in all conditions, even when it was really crappy and I was the only person in the water.

Blogging is the same sort of thing. I don’t think about it, I just do it.

The second reason is simple…

I’m not actually a “blogger.”

Sure, I tell people I’m a blogger, and I sure write a lot of articles on blogs. But in the end, I’m not really a blogger.

I’m a engineer, surfer dude, aficionado of exotic tropical milkweeds, once-and-future-caver dude, computer programmer, former US Marine, carpenter, occasional rock climber, stairscaper, mentor to friends and acquaintances, all around “good guy” during the day… and a thoroughly bad boy when I go out at night (but I don’t write about that. Here).

Fundamentally, I’m a writer.

All this… stuff… gives me an incredibly rich vein of material to mine for writing. Just writing out that list induced a cascade of article ideas through my brain. And I haven’t had my morning cup of coffee yet.

But there’s more I need to learn, especially about writing. I want to improve the quality of my writing, and that’s going to require more time per article than I’m spending right now. Sure, quantity has it’s own quality, I get that. But taking the game to the next level requires more BS&T.

So if the posting frequency here on Website In A Weekend slows down a bit, it’s not because I’ve run out of ideas (no “brain crack” for me). It’s because I’m amping up elsewhere.

I can assure you my draft queue is still growing.

In fact, it’s gotten too large. I need to shorten it. Recall I’m the “Professor” type blogger. I have a bunch of professor-type articles languishing in Drafts. You can help me unload my drafts queue; which article do you want to read most:

I’ll run this poll until I’m tired of looking at it, then write the article most in demand.

In the meantime, I’m working on my own revenue plan, which I’ll write more about in the near future. Yes, there will be affiliate links. Yes, it’s a good program or I wouldn’t be wasting my time. And no, you don’t have to buy anything to get some really amazing benefits. If you’re willing to put in the work…

But what about you?

Where are you at as a blogger? Are you in The Dip, or have you already come through it? Are or you still in that first flush of productivity? I know there’s a bunch of you lurking out there in my RSS feed… stop reading start writing! Share your story. Give us a link so we can visit you.

"Hi Dave,
Website In A Weekend seems pretty cool. I'm serious about this WordPress and web stuff, and I'd like to keep up with it. My name is and my email address is . I'm comfortable with email newsletters. I know you will protect my privacy, and that I can unsubscribe at any time. "

If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
The big boys seem to agree that it takes roughly 2 years to really start making money as a blogger. That is a lot of writing, for little payoff in those first two years.
I think that success requires just a little bit of being crazy, or maybe just “irrational determination”. That sounds better.

I’ve considered myself a pro blogger for several years now since I was able to earn an income doing it. However, it’s not my only source of income.

Running several other businesses and teaching at PSU are other revenue-generating passions that I have. Being a “blogger” is simply another notch I have on my belt.

@Sean – I think it’s 2 years from when a person “gets serious.” For me that would have been about the first of June. So I have a ways to go. One the other hand, best I can tell, I’m doing pretty well given where I am right now.

@Gabe – That’s in my long term plan. I was talking to Sean a couple of days ago about the difference between a “Make Money Online” blog… and a blog that makes money online. This is usually a really big difference.

How did you know I was lurking from my rss feed? Ahahaha. .. How to control blog post revision. It’s not a plug in? Something to do with code? Interesting if that’s the case. That’s one less plug in to add to the blog’s loading time.

My biggest takeway from this post is to keep blogging in all conditions. Me, I beat a hasty retreat back to inland once I see the sea a little rough. Crappy should have not stopped me that easily. Well, I’d do better then. :)

@Jan – Tot up the traffic for any of the Big Name Bloggers. Doesn’t matter which one. Divide in the number of comments.

You get about 1%.

Look back over WIAW since Feb. About 1%. More comments now reflects more traffic.

Even better, look at the first few months of yoast.com. Almost no comments at all. Once I saw how Joost de Valk plowed through the dip, I’ve stopped worrying about it.

So yeah, all you lurkers out there. I know you’re out there. I see the traffic coming in, and I can count the comments. Just go ahead, give it up for this one, you can go back to lurking tomorrow.

In fact, I want a comment from a person who’s been reading since summer but hasn’t yet posted a comment. Who are you? Where do you blog? What’s your topic and interest? Yeah, you, I’m talking directly to you! Be the first!

I’m not a pro-blogger (yet) but already find the process immensely rewarding. Behind the research and planning of each post comes the consistent process of defining my audience and refining my “writing voice”. It’s improved my writing overall, not just while blogging.

Hi there–just popping in from Shoe Money. I appreciate your comment about my blogging woes. I will indeed “suck it up”. You write well. I just became a fan.

Dr Wordpress! November 10, 2009 at 10:52 pm

@Walter – It *is* rewarding. Intensely.

@Dana – The way I understand it, it takes about 2 years from when you commit to it. Not 2 years from when you start blogging.

@Christelyn – You weren’t saying anything I haven’t felt in the past, and sometimes even said in the past! I definitely empathize with you. My friends, however (Walter above is one of them), have firm instructions to kick my ass if I get too down in the mouth. Glad to have you on board.

Two years which should be determined when one started getting serious with one’s blog and not on its chronological age. That escaped me yesterday when I read your post. Now, that’s a great food for thought.

Gordie Rogers November 10, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Hey Dave,
I’m the “Gordie” you mention at the top of the article. Thanks for the mention. I appreciate it along with the advice you left in my blog comments. If your blog draft backlog is getting too big, feel free to send one across as a guest post on my blog.

I’m going to hang in there and just focus on the basic and learning more about my niche as well as putting what I know into practice in my life.

Cheers.

@Dana – Commit, man, commit.

@Jan – Yup. Dig through the wayback machine or whatever. You can find my stuff floating around from mid-90s. And it doesn’t matter a bit. Pretty much nothing before June 1 2009 matters… except that the experience gets me a technical head start. But that’s not necessary, and may hinder.

@Gordie – Walking the walk is tough. But worth it.

Gordie,
Just discovered your blog and it’s encouraging. Its nice to see someone with a similar background engineer/programmer who has made the writing transition well! If you want to see what your first stuff might have been like, visit my site that is about Smart Energy storage and Use.

I, too, have read about the two year time frame before one is able to make decent money blogging. You state that it is 2 years after “getting serious”. What time frame do you suspect it would take for someone blogging part-time while working a full-time job? Thanks for your input.

I think the time frame really depends on how tight your focus is and how much business experience you have. Some people are knocking out of the park in months, others (possibly me) may struggle for several years.

So does this mean I’m going to have to stalk you all over the internet now? ;)

You know I’m not a blogger. I can write and most people get my smart a** undertone. My clients seem to like the updates. I really need to “commit” and start blogging on a more regular schedule though.

I’m about to send you an email about my affiliate program since you send me some many referrals anyway.

Dave Doolin March 19, 2010 at 11:20 am

Just do it weekly.

Have willing clients write for you. It could be a value-add for them.

Bring it on, I’m working on a client in the wine industry at the moment. He’s allergic to writing.
