(Reading time: 2 – 2 minutes)
Regularly posting content on your website or blog lures search engines to crawl regularly, increasing your search ranking.
Problem: You need a supply of articles for regular posting.
Practical WordPress Tip: Keep your draft articles in publication-ready form.
Here’s how to ensure your drafts are always ready to publish, even before you’re finished writing:
- Ensure all spelling and grammar is correct.
- Do not leave little notes to yourself or todo lists embedded in the article.
- Keep all conversational threads closed. Don’t start discussion on a topic or subtopic which you cannot finish.
- Use numbered or bulleted lists for outlines within the article, expand on only those list items you have time to finish in one editing section. The other list items provide material for future articles. You can use lists in lieu of a todo list, and remove them later if necessary.
Why: After an article gestates for a few days, you will often find it’s closer to publication than you originally thought. This procedure further cuts down on that time.

The big benefit I have discovered from using this method is that when I have drafts in my queue or on standby I am much more relaxed about writing. I don’t feel pressured out posts, and it makes it easier to keep up with posts. I write better and faster when I have a couple drafts ready to go.

At one point in July I cleaned up 17 drafts in a couple of days and scheduled them all in advance. That was pretty cool. Expect to see something like that pop up on There Is No Box pretty soon. I’m bringing over a series of draft posts from another website. It will be cool.
