Whose in Charge Here? You, or your blog?

by Dave Doolin on December 30, 2009 · 11 comments

(Reading time: 2 – 3 minutes)

Do you own your blog, or does your blog own you?

Hold on… I’m not talking about whether you own your own domain, or whether you’re self-hosted or not.

Nope. This is a different question.

Consider the following:

  • Are you driving your blog to where you want to go?
  • Or has your blog developed a life of it’s own? (and you’re just along for the ride)
Philosoraptor ponders

Philosoraptor, pwned by blogging

Here’s the funny thing: in the end, it doesn’t much matter… as long as you’re going in the right direction.

Let me explain…

Suppose you have your blog firmly in hand, and you’re executing well. Your strategy is working and you’re meeting your goals. Life is good.

On the other hand, perhaps your well-defined execution is taking you into a dead end. You feel guilty when you miss posting on your schedule. You’re starting to resent the time it’s taking to write articles. Commenting is getting tedious. Perhaps (you’re finding out) your vision sucked. Great execution on a sucky idea will only go so far.

Even worse, you’re not really in charge anymore. Your blog is in charge!

Life… could be better.

Now suppose your blog is attempting to “break free” and head off in a new direction. Maybe it already has. The key question is this:

Is the new direction better than the original?

If so, ride it.

If you’re not sure and current strategy is in tatters, consider riding the new direction anyway just to see where it goes.

Here’s the take home:

  • If your blog is serving you, polish, refine, hone, sharpen, extend what you’re already doing. Whatever is working, keep doing more of that.
  • If you’re serving your blog and it’s taking you in the right direction, loosen the reins and let it run. If it’s taking you into a dead end, change direction.

So whose in charge on your little corner of the internet, you, or your blog?

I’m almost certain I’m in control of my blog because it beats the heck out of not blogging at all. In other ways I would say I feel like it could end up getting in control instead however I’m letting time tell that one.

I feel my blog is in control because it’s what I enjoy writing about and helping others (I hope, anyway) with questions they have and information they need.

Taking action and deciding where you want your blog to go and then putting fourth the effort to get it there is too much fun not to explore in my opinion.

Now more than ever, with 2010 literally just a day away, getting your blog shaped the way you want is a sweet idea.

Here’s what to watch for: When you change direction, your blog may still want to go in the same direction. That’s what I’m dealing with!

Hi David,
I’m firmly in control of my blog. However, to get more content onto it without me having to drive myself crazy trying to write more than two posts per week. I have assembled a team of 7 other bloggers who are now part of a team of writers for my blog. It’s going to be an exciting experiment. Will keep you updated.

Cheers,
Gordie

Dave – I def cannot let 2009 leave without thanking you once more for all you’ve done for me this past month since I discovered your blog.

I’m not sure which scenario fits me, I think my blog and I trade off who is in control. I have a decent idea of how I’m re-structuring things for 2010…along with doing my guest post feature (which you are still on that list, Buddy!)

One major thing for me this year will be to determine how to monetize my blog…either through residual income or via conversions to clients. That will be a major project for me but one I’m excited to take on!

Again, thanks for everything and I will continue to come here, tweet your stuff, etc!

Happy Happy New Year!

Michelle, you’re probably the best… “twitterer?” I know. I’m sure you will be able to find clients. There’s really quite an art to it!

I bet you can develop both residual income and get clients.

That is part of my 2010 goals. I do very very little self-promotion on Twitter, despite my 100+ tweets a day. I’m probably not doing anyone any favors by not putting out a few at least!
