Nice post on WP plugin programming. Am no stranger to PHP though. It does however help quite a bit if you have a solid foundation on PHP to get you started. Nice post on "mothballing" your blog Dave.

I would recommend PHP 5 for Dummies. Their books are good for learning some basic techniques. Not to mention you can make your way to my site if you like. I have some simple tutorials over there as well. Hope this helps.

Yeah, here's what to do: ignore everything I wrote in this post for now, and don't fool with building a sandbox. Yet.

Instead, just poke at a simple plugin using Notepad and FTP.

I do recommend setting a test blog though. A blog you can totally delete when you wreck it with bad php. But it won't come to that. Just delete the bad plugin with your FTP client.

I'll have a suite of tiny little demo plugins ready soon. Within a couple of weeks for sure. I'll announce them on the newsletter. The link is here: http://website-in-a-weekend.net/plugins/

Once you get addicted, then build out your sandbox and get after it.

It's kind of a little dream of mine to one day know how to creat Wordpress Plugins. First I want to learn to build Wordpress Themes from scratch. I am taking things one step at a time since I have SO much to do and SO much to learn.

But ... the extent of my programming experience is ... well, when I was about 8 years old, around 1983, we had a Texas Instrument Computer. It had a blue screen and white letters. My sisters and I could program it to spit out characters on the screen in different patterns and sequences. It was SOOOO cool .... we played with it for hours.

So ... yeah I am a very experienced computer programmer. I should have a degree.

Where would someone like me start? Ie, someone with my intense extensive knowledge and skill in programming? Is there a good "for Dummies" book? I obviously wouldn't have to start with Wordpress Plugins ... but I should start from somewhere.

Just curious, if you have any ideas ...
