(Reading time: 6 – 10 minutes)
You know, sometimes I REALLY hate Google, because they “know best” for me. This article is not finished, by a long shot, but I accidently hit the publish button and it’s in my Google RSS cache permanently, with a stupid working title and stupid permalink. Yes, I can change the permalink, then I have to monitor my redirects. No way out. And why is this? Because that’s how Google Reader is designed: it caches on the permalink, forever.
So if you just dropped in, feel free to refresh every few minutes while I update this.
In any case, David Risley posted this challenge article Blog Giveaway: Win Copy Of Gary Vaynerchuk’s “Crush It!”. You should go there and enter the challenge as well. Here’s a recap to refresh your mind after you wade through all the comments:
I [DR] want to pick the top 10 contest entries who are absolutely crushing it. I want to reward people for taking action and making things happen as bloggers.. So, you can enter this contest by doing the following two actions:
- Post a comment below and tell me and everybody else what you have accomplished so far this year to CRUSH IT with your blog. What will you do in the next 3 months? What are you doing differently to really step up your game? How are you actively making 2010 an absolutely killer year for your life as a blogger?
- Retweet a link to this post and tell your followers that you’ve entered the contest.
I left a lengthy comment over on David’s site. An expanded version of that comment follows.
Here’s what’s been happening on Website In A Weekend, and where we’re going:
- Website In A Weekend eCourse published in January. 25 modules, all freely available, now in weekly rotation to stay up to date.
- Raised prices across the board, which is yielding more sales. My previous (and current) low prices reflect a lack of business experience and, frankly, low business self-esteem. I have no problem admitting what’s patently obvious… just don’t think it’s going to stay that way…
- Readership doubled, over 12,000 per month from 6,000 in December 2009. (Thanks in part to James Richmond for tactical advice). I’ll be stepping this up again to double twice over in 2010, target 50,000 monthly readers.
Am I thinking too small? Should I be going after 100,000 readers monthly? Maybe so, the market is still growing and fast.
- Developed 2 new high end website/internet marketing clients; boutique, custom work. Looking to pick up 1 new high end client per month through the rest of the year.
I’ve already introduced Mo Mellady’s Planet Check website, will be introducing my current project in a month or so.
By the way, if you’re in the market for a totally unique, completely custom WordPress-based website that looks nothing like a “blog,” contact Dori Yuen. Dori and I worked together on Planet Check and my current project. You won’t find anything else like her work anywhere.
- Blog Post Engineering ebook launches May 5. This is The Last Word in publishing a single blog post, 50 pages worth or material taking that single blog post from title through SEO all the way to promotion (“be everywhere”).
Blog Post Engineering comes with a “Lifetime Warranty.” I use the book myself (that’s why I wrote it). As I add material, I will periodically issue free upgrades to customers. There’s about 20 copies left for the pre-launch release with ~50% discount (use code “Easter”).
- Continue to focus on delivering superior quality material.
I have to make another confession: I tend to see the flaws in my writing rather than the strengths. It gets me down when I know that my best isn’t my best. Which motivates me to try a lot harder. You benefit.
- Continue building staff. I have 3 confirmed staff authors (Gabe, Anna and Aaron), and 2 tentative (Dave and Rachna).
By confirmed, I mean their 2010 articles are finished and pending-in-queue for publication. This is not a promise for future delivery, these authors have already delivered. Dave and Rachna have given me “All systems go!” I just haven’t spent the time putting their material in queue yet.
Anyone interested in guest posting or a staff author position, contact me. It’s easy to make promises, I’m looking for more: delivery up front. The Website In A Weekend guest post policy is very liberal, and the Website In A Weekend audience is diverse enough to support a wide range of material.
- Alexa 3 month stats have improved from 90k to under 50k. This is on track for moving down to 20k by years end.
Should I be more ambitious? Harsh Agrawal took Shout Me Loud from PR0 to PR5 in a year, with Alexa under 8k. I’m very impressed with what he achieved.
- Plugin development and coding: Without tipping my hand too much, my hRecipe semantic web plugin usage is growing well, despite no promotion at all. I’ll be promoting hRecipe heavily over the rest of the year and get a jump on semantic web technology (coming to a blog near you… did I just tip my hand?)
Also, food bloggers seem to be an odd bunch from my perspective. If I have any food bloggers out there, please leave me a note. You can find a lot of help on Website In A Weekend, I’ll show you where to look.
More more more… WordPress Whitepapers… I have 6 in draft, 5 more outlined. These Whitepapers are The Last Word on their topic. Very tightly focused, action oriented, and maintained. I use these whitepapers myself.
Two reasonably priced membership sites are in development right now, the first one will launch in mid-May: Blog Maintenance Challenge. 15 modules for small business owner to learn “care and feeding” of their WordPress blog. Content is dripped so that people aren’t overwhelmed with too much stuff. That’s happened to me in the past.
Want more?
- Adopted the Estimated Reading Time plugin, expect a new release very shortly.
- More tutorial plugins coming, with tentative plans for a plugin tutorial ebook. (Still gauging the market on that one).
- Page Rank hit 4, up 2 in 6 months. I can do better, I can hit 6 by December. Keller Hawthorne did PR0 to PR6 in 9 months, I should be able to increase from 4 to 6 in that time frame. Page rank really does matter to search results, my traffic increases with my page rank.
I realize there’s a lot controversy about page rank. I’m ok with that. If you aren’t interested increasing your page rank, I’m happy for you. I am, and you should be happy for me.
- Currently ranking for some important key words in WordPress development (e.g., register_activation_hook) leading people with pain points directly to my site. I’ll continue to nail down more of these by trawling the usual forums for frustrated users then posting the *correct* answer (because I tested it) on my site. Will start gunning down keywords in blogosphere as well.
There’s more, but I like to have things “in the can” before announcing.
What about you?
If you didn’t comment over on David Risley’s article, perhaps you could share what you have in store on your blog, business or website.
You don’t have to share it all, just something cool that you’re proud of.

Yep, done that too. Not quite as bad though; I just hadn’t done some formatting. Bit of a pain that Google latches onto the permalink forever more though.
Anyway – your plans! Wow. I can no longer call myself ambitious. Best of luck, but somehow I don’t think you’ll need it.
Heather, I can’t work any harder… so I’m down with taking all the luck… and support… that’s offered!
We still have some unfinished business. Remember those beautiful SERPs could be yours.
.-= Dave Doolin´s last blog ..Super or Total? Money Talks But Cache Rules =-.
In that case, consider luck yours! And support if you need it.
As for Serps stuff, I hadn’t forgotten I’ve just been crazily busy over the last couple of days. Working on it steadily though.
As you know already (but for the benefit of your lovely readers who haven’t been over to the competition post yet) I got scared off entering by lists such as yours. People are queuing up over there to show off the big guns. I can’t yet work out whether that’s a reflection of the brilliance of the book on offer or just lots of faces wanting to tell Sir how hard they’re working. In either case, I decided to go shopping instead ;)
Seeing your big long list of stuff, I echo Heather: “Good luck!” It is an honour to be in a position to watch this mastery unfold.
.-= Eleanor Edwards´s last blog ..Five seconds of fame and a massive thank you =-.
Eleanor, I used feel the same way, but I’m discovering that doesn’t pay the rent!
I am *sure* if you seriously listed out everything you have currently going on with Give A Brick, and listed out all your in-motion plans, people would be stunned.
But it’s a huge leap of faith… am I going to “pull it off?” Or am I going to expose myself as a poser and a fraud?
I have no idea.
I do know that what I’ve tried in the past (not this) hasn’t worked, so it’s time to try something new. “Damn the torpedoes!”
.-= Dave Doolin´s last blog ..On Literary Pranks & Other Forms of Gentle Mischief =-.
I’m sure you’re right Dave. But I’m looking forward to all the ‘ta-da’ moments to come. Wouldn’t like to give the whole show away just yet ;)
I also made a conscious decision this afternoon to be a little bit different. That post is already full of lots of brilliant lists and will be saturated by close of play. The chances of winning are the same for everyone but for the sake of £7.99 I decided I had better odds on getting some eye balls over to Give A Brick by playing my hand in the way that I did. Not only did I get the opportunity to invite new writers to join the community and ask everyone to Give A Brick, thanks to you I even got a plug in for The Giving Machine ;)
Your comment about trying something different reminds me of the quote about the definition of stupidity as doing the same things over and over and expecting new results. I’m pretty sure I just savaged the original quote but you get the essence I’m sure :)
.-= Eleanor Edwards´s last blog ..The Give A Brick Big Audio Challenge – video! =-.
Smart, smart thinking Eleanor.
In my case I have the sense that so much of what I do is “outside the box” that I need to step into the box once in a while to calibrate.
You got the quote about right.
.-= Dave Doolin´s last blog ..Warping WordPress into a “pretty website” =-.
Thanks Dave. That’s good to know :)
And on that happy note I shall bid you good night. Need my beauty sleep :)
Yep echoing Dave,

Your traffic details are very interesting and make me wonder about the Alexa ranking….I know it isn’t the “be all and end all” but I wonder if it fits certain niches better?
For example, your Alexa at about 47K destroys mine at 438K. You also have double the inbound links according to websitegrader.com (have you tried this tool?).
But in your post today you say you have grown to 12K visitors per month. Is that visits or pageviews? I had 93K page views in March on 36K visits (23.3K unique).
So the traffic doesn’t seem to match Alexa.
Just curious – you’re doing far more than I am and it’s great to see all your progress. So I’m not posting tis to claim any great success on my part! Just curious about Alexa.
David, Alexa rankings depend on who visits. If they have the Alexa toolbar installed, you get a hit. If they don’t, you don’t get a hit.
Find a community where Alexa tool bar is prevalent, your Alexa ranking will increase. A community where it’s not, it will decrease.
Some examples:
My biggest day here at 992 on WordPress stats corresponded to an Alexa ranking of 85k. I about fell out of my chair.
Conversely, I’ve had days in the mid-300s where my rankings were around 30k.
All a function of who is visiting.
For what it’s worth, I’ve gone to a lot of effort to maintain “smooth” traffic growth. My numbers are solid, not very spiky. I believe, with absolutely no shred of evidence, that this gives me better retention. The real truth… who knows. But I like smooth numbers, so that’s what I go for.
As usual, I have an article brewing on this, but getting it right takes a lot of research, time is pressing elsewhere.
Also, the numbers I use are from WordPress Stats, which I believe are fairly conservative, that is, unique views.
.-= Dave Doolin´s last blog ..Hostest With the Mostest – Being a good neighbor on shared hosting =-.
OK good point on why they are different. I think wordpress stats aren’t on the conservative side though. As far as I know they correspond to pageviews. So the numbers I gave you on visitors were from Google Analytics and are quite different in WordPress – 93,200 in March. Obviously hockey fans don’t use the Alexa toolbar much!
David, yes, this is where the difficulty with all of this comes in: we both “think” we have some notion what’s going on, but it’s really hard to know for sure without a peek at the actual source code running these algorithms.
I recall looking at GA a while back and seeing it report ludicrously low numbers. Like, unique hits for a day less than the unique number of commenters I had on a particular blog post. I don’t recall the details, but GA lost a lot of credibility with me. I regard the GA numbers with the same suspicion as I regard Alexa and Compete numbers.
And here’s something really telling: if Alexa is so “bad,” why do advertisers continue to use it? If advertisers couldn’t use Alexa to run profitable campaigns, they wouldn’t use it!
Digression: I don’t talk much about what is or isn’t effective SEO, outside of what I see proven for myself. Truth is, when you derive an algorithm and run it, your results might far different than you think they ought to be. This *must* happen at Google all the time. Which is why they are always tweaking their methods. Enough for now.
I just played with that website grader tool you mentioned and I love it. It told me that GAB is in the top 0.6% of websites in the world. That has made my night. I shall go to bed and dream sweetly :)
.-= Eleanor Edwards´s last blog ..Give A Brick: Making the impossible, possible (but we’re gonna need your help) =-.
I’ve used it in the past, and I’m due for another round of maintenance. I’ve scored really high before. No idea where I am right now.
Well great to find Give a Brick because fundraising is my profession! And congrats on top 0.6% – that’s fantastic! I look forward to working through your site tonight.
Thanks David,
I suspect you and I should probably talk again some time soon. And thank you for being good for your word and Giving A Brick. It is very much appreciated :D
You wait until you see our new site. Boy is it going to rock! I’m so excited, I can’t wait.

Dave, some great ideas for expansion here. I’m going to be bookmarking this post for a great reference point over the next few weeks. There are some equally supportive and helpful comments.
However, I was now under the impression the PR didn’t have any significance any more, I could be wrong.
Thanks for sharing this info.
Regards
Paul
Paul, people with low page rank will tell you page rank doesn’t matter. And that’s true, for them.
But Google _must_ order search results somehow, and their publicly reported page rank is an indicator how much value they believe your page has.
It’s like this: if you and I wrote more or less the same article, but I have higher page rank, my article will almost surely appear ahead of yours in search listings. When I’m selling goods and services, this is important to me.
There’s a lot brouhaha about page rank, most of which I don’t pay any attention to. Mine is going up to 6 in the short term, worrying about what anyone believes is pointless.
You are definitely “Crushing It”! Nice job w/ what you’ve done and with what you have planned. Love the Planet Check website.
I see now that I am going to need to expand and delegate efforts on my site in order t continue growing. Its a bit nervous, but exciting too.
BTW, I just broke my 100K Alexa ranking today. Big accomplishment for me. :D

I won’t bore you with too many details, but I recently had a complete directory crash (my own stupid fault) as I was attempting to migrate my exsisting b2evolution blog to WordPress. Nightmare. Don’t get me wrong WordPress is the better choice for me, but it’s been a real experience.
In spite of all the challenges this presents I am getting very close to adding a free and premium templates site on the Blogs With Wings domain.
In preparation for this and to recoup lost readership since the directory went south I am lining up a couple of contests designed to engage the contestants in promotional activities for BWW.
Also preparing to release a free social bookmarking system and tool to help bloggers quickly and effectively establish backlinks and higher visibility for their blogs.
I’m an ambitious little Angel :)

Yeah. I need to rush right over to DR and post that comment. My big plans for the next three months are sure to rank up there with yours. Me, I’m just hoping to increase my level of technical competence and proficiency, improve the content quality and revise older posts to bring them up to a higher standard, put more effort and content into my money blog – meaning actually earn something from it and last figure out what my damn niche is. Never compete with an engineer unless you are a creative genius.

Watching movies is never a waste Ralph. You should check out my latest offering. It’s really rather fun (or I have a daft sense of humour, I’ll leave that for you to decide.)

.-= Eleanor Edwards´s last blog ..Wednesday Warmer: This made me laugh, but I’m probably biased! =-.
Dave, this is really great. Having self doubt doesn’t pay the rent.
Personally, I have an ebook coming out soon, about achieving your goals, followed by another ebook – How to get rich in 31 days. I’m still working through all of this and it’s taking a lot longer than I would like.
I’ve launched my services online (1 hour brainstorm/consulting time), results are looking good so far!
Still lots to achieve and to be honest, I’ve probably not thought of it all because my business is offline and I’m starting to build an online business on the back of it…

And if I’m write, everyone in our circle needs to find a way to connect to each other such that we form an integrated community. Not just a few links and guest posts here and there. More like capitalizing on FOAF and rel tags…
